Apex Mountain on The Rewatchables
96:01 – 98:58… oh, yeah, I see how the budget got to $19 million or whatever. Sure. Manny's watching De Palma's first movie on the TV when Sally... Murder All the Moment. Apex Mountain. I'm going to say, for De Palma, it's probably Dressed to Kill, where he has the most... Isn't Scarface his Apex Mountain? No, but Dressed to Kill, he can basically do anything he wants after that. That movie made a shitload of money. The other convergence, though, is that George Lido, who is his producer, became the president of Filmways, the production company of this movie, and that is why this movie got me. Blowout, it's... Yeah, the chase sequence, I think, through the parade, it's pretty high level. Yeah, that's fair. I just am... Like, when you talk about all this stuff, Bill, I'm like, oh, yeah, I see how the budget got to $19 million or whatever. People didn't love it around town. They love Dressed to Kill. Yeah. But it's, you know, it's weak. It's not as sexy. Like, it's not the signatures that he had in his previous couple of movies. What did they want him to do instead? Were there other projects that he was... Well, he wanted to do Prince of the City. Prince of the City was the movie he wanted to do in the early 80s. And Lumet does it. Which is wrong for that. And Lumet was right for it. Right. He would, like... That's a Lumet movie. Yeah. Through and through and through. Yeah. Travolta, no. Nancy Allen, probably not. Lithgow, no. This episode is brought to you by Mazda. Want to be as confident behind the wheel as I am about a movie nobody else will admit as a top five all-timer? I just think this would have been the biggest story of 1981. Other than maybe Reagan getting assassinated. And Travolta would have been trailed by paparazzi. And it would have leaked out. And they would have had... Like, just like what happened to JFK assassination. They shut down that whole hospital. There was weird shit going on. Yeah. There was like secret autopsies happening. And if this guy was really had a chance to be the president... They just have him in a corner of a Philadelphia ER. Like, ah, that guy. Like, Ryan the stiff. And Franz, people are probably murdered. It's a way bigger deal. I just... I just want to say that I just did not know. Yeah. I didn't realize. It took me a few times. I thought on the first 11 or 12 times I watched this movie that this guy was just the governor. But that confirms... A gubernatorial candidate. That confirms why it's the signature flaw of the movie. Right. Is that even in watching it multiple times, you never really put it together because you'd be like, there'd be a bigger deal out of this, right? Yeah. I trust the filmmaking so much that like, clearly, this is just like, this is just not that big
